First race of the season for me PDF Print E-mail

I had looked forward to this week for a long time, and showed up with a big smile on my face for the first practice sessions in my new car on Friday morning.

Terry from AVO Turbo and his guys had been working on the new Honda Civic Model EG that I was going to drive this year, and I must say they made a really great job of it. The car looked immaculate.

I expected a few hick-up along the way during Friday as we missed the Practice session Thomas had set up the week before because the car was having some ECU programming problems. Terry got them sorted out during the week, and when he tested it, we found out that this little 1500 cc car actually had a total of 150 WHP which was amazing, and a huge step up from my old trusty Toyota Vios that had about 105 WHP.

First obstacle was getting in and out of the car, but during the weekend I got the hang of that, and for next race we will improve on that with a detachable steering wheel.

Second obstacle was the fuel tank seemed to be dirty inside as it was blocking up the fuel filter all the time, but after that was sorted I had some great runs in the car, and really enjoyed myself as it felt so different and better handing wise compared to my Vios, which is closer to a slightly modified road car.

Initially I was going to drive in the Club race class, which is why we had a 1500 cc engine in, but late min. the rules were changed and I had to join the Procup class, where everybody in the C class drives with either 1600 cc, 1800 cc or 2000 cc twin cam V-tec engines.

A few drivers like me had 1500 cc engines in, and we had great fun competing with each other on track all weekend, as we were like in a class of our own because everybody else were so much faster with the bigger and more powerful engines.

I set a goal for myself for the qualifying session which was to get under 1.40, and on lap 6 I did a 1.39.929, this was enough for 25th overall and 14th in class.

In race one, I had a slow start but was fighting with several other drivers during the race and had great fun, but unfortunately on lap 12 of 15 the fuel filter had blocked up again, and I came to a standstill on track, only 1 lap for being classified as 11th, and when I went out I was in 9th place.

In race 2 it had rained and the track was wet, and we started behind the safety car with me back in 25th place overall and 14th in class. This was my first time ever on a wet track in the car, so I took it easy in the start, and dropped a bit back to 28th place overall and 16th in class, but during the race, I got more and more confident and I moved up into 10th place at one point, but as the faster cars were lapping us I lost a few places and finished in 13th place in my class.

All in all a very good and enjoyable weekend, and we are now preparing for the next race in August, which will be a double event at Bira, and we will be considering if we should change to a 1600 or 1800 cc engine like everybody else. I really look forward to it.

In the mean time we will be doing the 6 Hour endurance race at Kraeng Kracharn with my trust old Vios on the 2nd and 3rd of July, which will be good fun also. My team mates will be John Heinecke and Thomas Raldorf.
